Brooklyn artist Greg Bogin (b. 1965) is an abstract painter best described as a communicator in color. A lifelong New Yorker, Bogin’s innovative style and deep connections to the city we call home made him the natural choice to kick off our Artist’s Series, a collection of ultra-limited shoe collaborations with today’s greatest artists.
Bogin’s take on the GREATS Royale is inspired by Pop Art, cycling kits, and the vintage signage found all over Brooklyn. “I take a lot of cues from logos and signs and nostalgic images,” says Bogin. “There are remnants of those in Brooklyn that inspire me.”
The shoe’s full-grain leather upper is handmade in Italy and printed with one of Bogin’s signature motifs: a neon gradient evoking both movement and minimalism. Contrast logo details and suede heel tabs round out the shoe.
Limited to just 30 pairs, the Greg Bogin x GREATS Royale is art with laces - an iconic piece for curators and sneakerheads alike. While the Artist’s Series shoes is the highest-production Bogin to date, business was never a part of it.
“In today’s art world, money is sort of the defining role,” reflects Bogin, “but I feel like the value of the piece is sort of separate from the object. I feel like what makes someone great is that they have a continual desire to surprise themselves.”
